September Studios x 4dition

We sat down with young creative collective September Studios, following our recent collaboration, to explore the process behind their productions and learn more about the talent behind the name.

Who are September Studios?

September is comprised of three co-directors: Amber, Stevie and Shaun. We are a creative studio that brings ideas to life. We create opportunities instead of waiting for opportunities to come to us. At the root of it all, September is a collaborative space for creatives.

What Inspired the direction of your editorial?

Japanese green film was initially our inspiration for this shoot. The concept was grungy and had tones of a slight grain in texture. However the idea adapted, and instead of a green tinge in colour grading, we opted for high colour contrasts.

This gave the photos more of a lively demeanour and “local” feel for the story of three individuals tackling the streets.

What was the idea behind each look?

Stevie: A tired, overworked businessman with an eye for style. Subtle eyeshadow and rolled-up sleeves shows that the draining work life is tough, but it never ends.

Amber: Playful yet functional, Amber is the only one with a shade of colour in her wardrobe. A jumper with asymmetric spray paint design and a heavy material, Amber's dressed in preparation for it to get messy.

Shaun: Sleek, uniform and utilitarian. Dressed in black from head to toe, Shaun appreciates the smaller things in life. A minimal outfit draws attention to the smaller details, like the fold in his dress pants or the box fit of his top. Shaun dresses with purpose, with functionality being at the forefront of his wardrobe.

What were some difficulties you faced during production?

Shooting at night without at least 2 lights was something new for us. Working with flash is an entirely different realm of photography, yet equally as interesting. Flash allows for the camera to take on personality, as in it almost seems like a paparazzi shoot. It looks as if there is news reporters following these characters around, snapping flicks for an article.

This allowed us to embrace the characters more, being able to look directly at the camera or adapt an annoyed expression. The element of fiction is up for debate in this shoot.

Where do you see September in a few years from now?

Within less than a year, we’ve expanded our skills in creative direction, photography and production. Our portfolio of modelling and media work is only growing, with the opportunities we’ve had to collaborate with other talents from all sorts of industries. We love connecting with other creative souls!

September is and always will be a passion project where we do what feels right to us. Even if external opportunities are presented to us, the September flare will always be most prominent. In the face of the artistic community, it can often be easy to forget yourselves. After all, it’s the nature of assimilation and belonging culture. But here at September, we'll always have each other to remind ourselves of the fact. You can only ever be unapologetically and authentically yourself.

Even when all of us have individually conquered the creative domains we want to excel in, SEPTSTUDIOS will always be home, a reminder to stay true to ourselves.
